Honor Laken Hope Riley: her legacy, love, and advocacy lives on.

Welcome to the "About Us" page of the Laken Hope Riley Memorial website. This site is dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of Laken Hope Riley, a beloved 22-year-old nursing student from Woodstock, Georgia.

Laken's life was tragically cut short on February 22, 2024, while she was out for a run on the University of Georgia campus. Her untimely death has left a profound impact on her family, friends, and the broader community.

Laken was a vibrant individual who graduated from River Ridge High School, where she excelled as a member of the track team. She began her college journey at the University of Georgia and later transferred to Augusta University to pursue a nursing degree at their Athens campus. During her time at the University of Georgia, she was an active member of the Alpha Chi Omega (AXΩ) Sorority, embodying the values of friendship, leadership, and service.

The devastating incident involving Laken's suspected killer, Jose Antonio Ibarra, has sparked significant discussion and concern about immigration policies. Ibarra, a 26-year-old unvetted immigrant from Venezuela, was arrested and charged with her murder. This tragedy has highlighted ongoing debates about the handling of the U.S.-Mexico border and the vetting of immigrants entering the country.

In a moment that further brought attention to Laken’s story, President Joe Biden mentioned her during his State of the Union address. However, his mispronunciation of her name and subsequent clarification on the term "illegal" versus "undocumented" underscored the sensitivities surrounding immigration discourse.

Despite these controversies, the focus here is to remember and celebrate Laken's life. Her memory serves as a poignant reminder of the need for addressing unvetted immigrants with criminal backgrounds to prevent such tragedies.

Through this website, we aim to keep Laken's spirit alive, sharing stories of her kindness, dedication, and the impact she had on those around her. Join us in honoring her memory and advocating for a safer, more just world.
